When Deirdre signed onto the SkillSET Programme, she was unsure of what she was capable of doing as she has no qualifications and is unable to read. However, she was very keen to get a job and was hoping to get into Retail.
Gaining some qualifications became the primary focus and as a result Deirdre was enrolled in a retail academy scheme that was being delivered in conjunction with Lidl. Deirdre completed the 6 week theory training which she described as “a very positive experience, as it boosted my confidence and gave me hope of securing a job in the future.” She then progressed onto the practical side of the training which involved a 6 week placement in Lidl.
With support from her NOW Group Employment Officer, Deirdre completed all the necessary online induction training. She turned up each week at Lidl, even though she was experiencing anxiety and butterflies in her stomach!
Despite Deirdre’s lack of qualifications and self-belief, she still managed to impress Lidl management. Sarah Law, Manager of the Lidl Store in Omagh said Deirdre “has a great can-do attitude and always asks if there is anything else she can do before she leaves.”
Upon successful completion of her placement, Deirdre was offered a 10 hour contract working from 9am -2pm on a Tuesday & Wednesday commencing 26th September. She has described her experience with Now Group SkillSET programme as “Amazing!”
The SkillSET programme is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
